Days for Girls is an international organization which helps increase access to menstrual care and education in developing countries. The organization was started 11 years ago and now has helped over 1.5 million girls in 110 countries. There is an educational component that is given when the kits are distributed.
The Fernie chapter has been operating for over five years. Each month, 24 amazing volunteers come together at Christ Church Hall to produce kits for distribution around the world. Our Fernie chapter makes about 400 to 500 kits per year. Part of the components of the kit involve sewing reusable menstrual pads. The kits cost $10 per kit.
The cost of the kits and a recent decision to eliminate plastic Zip-Loc bags for kits has meant that the Fernie chapter is short of funds. The fabric for the reusable “transport” bags is water proof and is quite expensive. The Rotary Club of Fernie offered to help support this important initiative.
