The Fernie Seniors Drop-In Centre held its 60th anniversary Fall Tea on Saturday, October 26.
Jim Booth, President of the Fernie Senior Citizens Club, said the tea is a big fundraiser for the club.
“We have close to 400 members,” he said. “It’s a great turnout, and we really appreciate the citizens of Fernie for supporting us.”
Booth said that he hopes the special event will continue for many more years.
“We are quite proud, because we just won the Fernie Business Excellence Award for 2019 for the Spirit of Fernie,” he said. “That was very surprising. Thank you very much for that award.”
Booth said the Fernie Seniors Drop-in Center and the Fall Tea are great places for seniors to come and socialize.
“Anybody can join, 19 years and older,” he explained. “We are quite a busy club. We are quite active. We hope to keep it that way and keep our activities going.”
Booth explained that the drop-in center now has a restaurant and snack bar.
“It’s open from nine o’clock until two o’clock in the afternoon,” he said. “We serve great lunches. Come out and give us a try. It’s open Monday to Friday.”
Mitigating loneliness is one of the Fernie Citizens Club’s objectives.
“We have a very friendly atmosphere for people that are by themselves and would like somewhere to go and feel like they are at home,” he said. “We welcome you at the Fernie Seniors Club.”
