The Travelling World Community film festival rolls into Kelowna March 12 to 15.
This is the chance for local residents to see a great selection of recent social justice documentary films.
The Travelling World Community film festival will start at UBCO on Thursday, March 12, continue at the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society on Friday, March 13, and the bulk of the films can be seen at Okanagan College on Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15.
The program this year features a selection of more than 35 documentary films from around the world. The Travelling World Community Film Festival is known for the breadth of topics covered as well as for the first class quality of the productions intended to educate, entertain and inspire.
The special Friday evening at Ki-Low-Na Friendship center will feature Coastal Tarsands: Journey to Deleted Islands, with a discussion to follow. Other festival highlights this year include Koch Brothers Exposed-about the billionaire brothers , The Man Who Stopped the Desert- set in northern Burkina Faso, American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs-about the author, social activist, philosopher, and feminist, and even a documentary about golf called A Dangerous Game. During the weekend at Okanagan College the area surrounding the entrance to the main theatre will be converted into an “activist arena” where community groups will have a chance to distribute their literature, make their causes known and talk with film-goers about films that tie-in with their areas of concern.
“Many attendees from past years tell us the festival is the first place they learned about important issues and how much they enjoy the festive but engaged atmosphere,” said Mark Haley, a festival volunteer.
Great food and baked goods will be available both Saturday and Sunday at the college. Please bring your own cup and enjoy popcorn, organic and local foods!
Also, the popular “Seedy Saturday” seed swap/sale will be running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday in the college E building atrium
Again this year, admission to the festival is free of charge and donations are accepted for the Ki-low-na Friendship Centre and Inn from the Cold.
