A man applying for trusted traveller clearance at the Pacific Highway border is now awaiting extradition to Oklahoma, after a fingerprint check alerted officials to a decades-old murder warrant.
Chief Thomas Schreiber confirmed the man was arrested June 24.
“The guy was applying for his Nexus card,” Schreiber said. “When he came in for the Nexus interview, we collected for fingerprints.”
The fingerprints matched a warrant issued in connection with a 1983 killing in Oklahoma, Schreiber said.
The traveller, identified as 48-year-old Burnaby resident Suhail Shanti, was turned over to Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
