A North Westside couple has been left homeless by fire.
Firefighters were called to Dunwaters Road in the Upper Fintry area at about 11 p.m. Wednesday.
“The place was fully involved when I got there and I found the residents out on the street,” said Wayne Carson, North Westside fire chief.
“We managed to hang on to an outbuilding and some vehicles but the house was destroyed.”
Carson admits the situation was volatile.
“It’s a good thing it wasn’t August (with the summer heat),” he said.
“The fire was trying to climb the trees.”
New water lines have been installed in the neighbourhood but they are not operating yet so that created a challenge for the firefighters. They had to rely on two tankers transporting water to the scene.
“We stayed ahead of the water,” said Carson.
The couple were not injured during the fire as the man was outside at the time and the woman was visiting a neighbour.
They stayed with a neighbour Wednesday night and Emergency Social Services has been contacted for assistance.
The fire department and the insurance adjustor will now sift through the remains and try and determine the cause of the fire.
But Carson isn’t sure how successful the investigation will be.
“It’s so totally gone,” he said of the structure.
