Mission Fire Rescue crews are mopping up the scene of a blaze in the area of Horne Street and Harbour Avenue.

Shortly before 11 a.m. reports came in about the fire, first reported to be near the Meeker Mill.

“Crews arrived at the end of Harbour and saw heavy, dark, grey smoke coming from under the pier, beside the river and crews put out the fire,” explained Mission assistant fire chief Norm McLeod.

The fire broke out in an area where several homeless people were camped.

“All the folks that were in the area are accounted for and we are just doing overhaul and mop up,” said MacLeod.

Ambulances were called to the scene, but no major injuries have been reported.

At this time the cause of the fire is undetermined, in fact, because of the heavy smoke it is still unclear what was actually ablaze.

It’s all wood structure under there, so judging by the smoke it looks like it’s involving some of the pier and all the tenting materials and everything else in that area.”

Crews will remain on scene for several hours to ensure the blaze is completely out.
