A fire has caused between $40,000 and $60,000 in damages to the historic downtown building that houses several businesses and tenant units, including the Nelson Brewing Company.
Nelson Fire and Rescue Services responded to a report of smoke coming from the roof of the large structure at 514 Latimer St. at 4:12 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release.
Twenty-one firefighters, two fire engines and two fire utility vehicles responded to the fire, which would have spread further if a delayed action sprinkler system hadn’t kept it in control until crews arrived.
Firefighters found the building had no operating alarm system, which meant many occupants in the building were unaware of the fire and had to be physically evacuated, according to the department.
There were no injuries caused by the fire or evacuation.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
