As summer is officially underway, and more people are out camping, the provincial Northwest Fire Centre in Smithers says people should use common sense when it comes to campfires.
Over the Canada Day long weekend, the fire centre responded to eight incidents where campfires were abandoned.
“We would like to remind the public they can’t leave their fires unattended,” Suzanne Pearce, communications officer for the Northwest Fire Centre said.
“Please extinguish them.”
With warm weather expected to last well into the weekend, Pearce said there is a reasonable risk of fire in the Terrace region.
However, along the Yukon boarder the fire risk remains extreme. Currently there is a 250 hectare fire burning west of Mount Edziza which Pearce said is not threatening any infrastructure, but the fire centre issued a modified response and is monitoring it.
