Fire guts old CN Rail bunkhouse

Blaze spotted early Saturday afternoon in old building near Atwood St. and Greig Ave.

Black smoke billowing from a blaze sparked in an old CN Rail bunkhouse by the train tracks brought out numerous fire engines including the Thornhill fire department just before 2 p.m. earlier this afternoon, June 20.

Firefighters and police hurried to the scene, with police vehicles at the intersection of Atwood and Greig to keep traffic and bystanders back.

Ten firefighters turned the water onto the flames that came out the windows of the old building and to the smoking roof, which soon broke and collapsed into the building.

Flames seemed to subside but then made a resurgence farther down at the door about midway along the building.

It was believed that homeless people were using the building as shelter, but there was no indication if anyone was in the building when the flames ignited.

After 2 p.m., most of the smoke and flames had subsided.
