The Rock Creek/Westbridge Fire Needs Committee is continuing to meet and is working to identify and address the needs it can be of assistance with.
In the fall, the committee used the start of its fund to build a number of outbuildings for those in the fire zone (some of which will be completed in the spring). We have also continued to collaborate with the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and other organizations offering help within our community.
Spring is coming, and so it is important to us that we are aware of individual and community needs, so we can steer our help towards the biggest needs. As we work to determine the best use of these donated funds, we recognize that spring brings opportunity to move forward, so we are working to move funds into the hands of individuals and families most affected by the fire.
There has been approximately $118,000 donated so far. We will be closing the account as of March 31, 2016 in order to complete the allocation of funds raised. Anything received following that date will be forwarded to the Kettle River Lions Club for dispersal.
If you have any questions, comments, or would like to draw our attention to a particular need, please contact us through Vicki Gee at 250-446-2042.
To donate you can either drop by the Greenwood Branch of the Heritage Credit Union or you can mail your donation to the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, 202 – 843 Rossland Ave., Trail, B.C., V1R 4S8 (specifying it is for the Rock Creek/Westbridge Fire Needs Committee). Either way you will receive a tax deductible receipt.
Our committee understands that for many people the emotions of last summer still remain with them. We would like to offer support for those feeling overwhelmed or struggling in this area. If you would like to talk with someone (to explore options and supports available), please contact us through Cathy Riddle at 250-449-1200.
We would like to express our appreciation for the generosity of the Canadian Red Cross and the Kettle River Lions Club; both of these organizations have contributed greatly, both in manpower and finances.
We also wish to thank the many donors who have contributed to this fund! So many have worked diligently to assist our communities and residents in rebuilding following the fire.
