Thanks to the overnight effort of fire crews, a fire north of Kelowna International Airport didn’t experience any growth overnight.
Fire information officer Melissa Welsh confirmed Friday morning the 3.1-hectare fire is now 100 per cent contained.
The blaze, which is being labelled as human-caused, started around 6 p.m. Thursday evening.
“We had an initial attack crew work on the fire overnight,” said Welsh.
“They’re still there…they’ll be applying water to hot spots in the fire perimeter.”
Kelowna International Airport had one flight cancelled and 10 flights delayed, according to airport director Sam Samaddar.
“The airspace was closed for about two hours and 40 minutes,” said Samaddar.
He noted the airspace had to be closed as air tankers and helicopters were in tight proximity to the approach area of YLW’s runways.
“We just couldn’t have both activities occurring at the same time.”
Heading into a weekend when an increase in wind is expected, Welsh said the public is reminded to be safe with fire-related activities.
“A lot of the fires we’ve been responding to this last week have been human-caused,” said Welsh.
“We’re really urging the public to be safe with their fire use.”
