The Horsefly Volunteer Fire Department is proud to celebrate Fire Prevention Week Oct. 7-13.
The 2018 theme is: Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.
Volunteers of the HVFD offer emergency services to Horsefly and its surrounding areas. The department strives to be well trained and well equipped. Financial assistance to help the HVFD achieve these goals is provided by the citizens of Horsefly paying their fire levies and with grants from BC Gaming, the Cariboo Regional District, Lions Club, Red Cross and others.
In 2018, the HVFD was able to purchase a 4×4 rapid attack truck in order to access difficult areas and to help fight wildfires.
A training building is also being constructed at the department’s fire hall at 3055 Boswell Street.
The building is being designed to better the department’s skills for fire operations and help them train for rapid intervention, building search and rescue, ventilation, ladder practice, confined space training, chimney fires and more.

Earlier this year, the HVFD introduced its new chief, Marc Caron, who took over the reigns from former fire chief Cecil Morhart.
“I’m just hoping to continue on the course we are going and bettering ourselves as firefighters and first responders and trying to do the best for our community,” Caron said.

Morhart, meanwhile, has dedicated countless volunteer hours in his career to the 26-year-old fire department.
The department is run entirely by volunteers, and currently has roughly 15 members.
The HVFD encourages the public to be educated and prepared about what to do in an emergency situation.
Their advice: remember to have a night visible, large house number at your residence as they won’t be able to help you if they can’t find you.
Anyone interested in joining the HVFD can leave a message at the fire hall, or give Caron a call at Horsefly Service, or stop by the hall during one of their Tuesday evening practices at 7 p.m.
