The Penticton firefighters local has a flippin good idea for breakfast this weekend.
Saturday and Sunday morning at Gyro Park as part of the annual Peach City Beach Cruise members of the International Association of Firefighters Local 1399 will be working the grills for their annual fundraising pancake breakfast.
With them will be faithful Ole No. 5 the local’s 1957, fully operational fire truck.
“So every year we do it, Penticton firefighters get out there on their own time and do the pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to about 11,” said union local spokesman Kevin Zazzara who will be among the flippers on hand. “All the proceeds go to the Penticton Firefighters Charitable Society and those are distributed through the community to different causes, like the burn fund (BC Professional Fire Fighters Association Burn Fund) Muscular Dystrophy and the OSNS (Child and Youth Development Centre).

“We have a lot of charity involvement in the community and this money goes a long ways and at the end of the year we’re able to help out a lot of the charities that make a submission to us.”
Last year over the two days, with the generous corporate donation from Scotia Bank, the breakfasts raised between $7,000 and $8,000.
Cost of the breakfast that includes pancakes, sausage, ham and a drink, is $7. Zazzara estimated firefighters serve up about 800 of the tasty day starters.
Mayor Andrew Jakubeit, members of council and the chiefs from the Penticton Fire Department are also expected to be on hand for some of the fun and food.
