Quesnel homeowners who take steps to FireSmart their homes this summer could receive some of their money back through a new rebate program.
Through funding from the Community Resilience Investment (CRI) Program, the City of Quesnel is offering $500 rebates to residents who take steps to FireSmart their homes or property.
During wildfires, airborne embers (firebrands) fly with the wind and can land in your yard, on your roof, or on the trees against your house, according to a press release from the City.
Protecting your home from wildfire begins with simple actions. A great place to start is to create a regular yard maintenance routine. This could include cleaning your gutters of debris, pruning trees, and clearing vegetation away from your home and combustible fence. Small steps like these add up and make a big difference.
Whether you are doing regular yard maintenance or making large-scale changes during renovations or landscaping, you can make choices that will help protect your home from wildfire.
To qualify for a rebate, residents must first have a FireSmart Home Assessment completed by the City of Quesnel’s Local FireSmart Representative, Amanda Vibert. Next, residents will need to take action on the recommendations made during the home assessment. Homeowners fill in the rebate form, attach receipts, if applicable, and before and after pictures of the work they have done. Even the time homeowners put into doing work on their property can be counted towards the rebate. A total of $1,000 in work needs to be completed to receive the $500 rebate.
Rebate forms are due by Aug. 15. Rebates are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to those who complete the required steps.
Contact Amanda Vibert at 250-255-5808 or firesmart@quesnel.ca for your free FireSmart Home Assessment.
