Fireworks, not another explosion, was the cause of the loud booms heard Saturday night, said Penticton RCMP.
“For the loud bang, this was not confirmed as an explosion. Officers conducting foot patrols in the area did hear and observe people setting off fireworks in the Penticton Secondary School grounds,” confirmed Penticton RCMP Const. James Grandy.
Pentictonites took to social media Saturday night after hearing some explosions at 8:15 p.m. near Municipal Avenue.
The community is on edge after numerous explosions and improvised bombs were found in and around downtown Penticton. At King’s Park, the pipe bomb damaged the bleachers there. Another improvised device was found near the bike racks at Carmi Elementary School. Police also taped off Ellis Creek at Industrial Avenue where they found evidence connected to the explosions.
Two weeks ago, RCMP called in bomb experts from the Lower Mainland to help out in their investigation.
Penticton police arrested and released a 50-year-old man without charging him for causing the recent explosions around town.
“RCMP are confident the public is not at risk, and appreciate everyone’s patience and support,” said Grandy last week.
According to RCMP, the man had no intentions of harming anyone.
The explosions may have been happening for months before police were notified, according to Grandy, who asked the public to report any explosions they hear.
