Fireworks used in tinder-dry conditions in downtown Hope

Amid a fire ban and active wildfire on Highway 7, some are lighting fireworks

The Hope Fire Department and RCMP have responded to at least three calls over the past week dealing with individuals using fireworks in the downtown Hope area.

On Saturday, Aug. 4, fire crews responded to Centennial Park to a small fire with evidence of firework use.

“Between the river bank and the fence, there was a grassy area that had a fire and passerby that were there had already had it extinguished,” said fire chief Tom DeSorcy.

“A small area, probably about 5 feet by 3 feet, very tiny, but concerning in the fact that there was evidence of firework usage in the area.”

During the response to a fire in Silver Creek Sunday, Aug. 5, the RCMP responded to a complaint that people were using fireworks in Hope’s Memorial Park.

The District of Hope is under a complete fire ban and wildfire fighters are working on a 25-hectare fire which has closed Highway 7.
