The Golden & District Community Foundation will roll out their first round of three Neighbourhood Small Grants for 2021.
Todd Menzies received a grant for Music Skill Share, which is seeking to bring five free online music workshops to members of the community in Golden and Area.
Registration for the workshops can be done by emailing todd@menziesmusic.com, with Basic Guitar being offered on April 18, Barre Chords and Scales on May 2, Songwriting and Arrangements and May 16, Guitar Maintenance on May 30 and Music Management on June 13.
Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine Wilkinson were awarded a grant for Book Share: All We Can Save, a program that is seeking six people who want to read All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis, and participate in a followup group discussion.
Those who participate will jot down their thoughts on the book and then pass it on to a friend, neighbour or coworker to continue to receive feedback and stimulate discussion.
Local author Jane Powell was the third grant recipient to offer Fiction Writing Workshops, two free online sessions for beginner writers, aged 10+.
Sessions will focus on how to build a good protagonist and building interesting story lines.
A Neighbourhood Small Grant is a grant of $50 to $500 given to an individual to bring a community building project to life.
The small grants program is supported by the Vancouver Foundation, which has a similar program for urban centres.
The small grants program was announced in early February of 2020.
The idea behind it is to allow community members to undertake projects that seek to make their neighbourhoods better places to live.
“Neighbourhood Small Grants is based on a simple but powerful idea that the best people to bring a community together are the ones within it,” reads the Community Foundation’s webstie.
“Grants are given to anyone with an idea to contribute to their community – no experience necessary. We believe everyone has something to offer.”
Some $7,000 is available in grants for 2021, with no deadline to apply throughout the year.
Applications are accepted online.
