submitted by Sandspit Rod and Gun Club–This year’s Trout Derby needed some of that patience as the road to Mosquito Lake was getting a new bridge installed. However, the guides (parents) and kids implemented plan B and did their camping at Grey Bay and the pit at Skidegate Lake. The weather was great for Friday and Saturday’s camp out but the forecast for Sunday was not good.As events evolved, Larry Duke (Ministry of Forests) and his contractor were able to open the road early Saturday morning (thanks, guys). Sunday morning saw the bulk of the kids and parents show up at Mosquito Lake. The weather also cooperated, it was grey, cool, misty and not much wind, so the boats headed out. Everyone managed to catch a trout and there were plenty of smiles at the weigh in. However, the kids looked to be having fun, water in the boots was in vogue, although mum had the ‘why’ look on her face. Nice to see some new names and faces among the many regulars. Thanks go to the many parents who had the patience to hang in and bring their kids and boats to the derby. Thanks, to my sidekick Alvilda, for the goodies, the rice squares were really popular, and your help with the names, ages and fish weight recording. Having Jack with us most of the day really wasn’t that bad.It turned out to be a good derby, especially seeing the turnout and participation, that was enjoyed and safe for all. Hope to see you all next year.
