A five hectare fire is burning down the side of Dog Mountain near Sproat Lake, B.C. Coastal Fire Centre representative Ellie Dupont said. No cause for the blaze has been determined yet.

Air tankers and six helicopters are currently fighting the blaze, which has spread from 1.5 hectares to five in just a couple of hours. RCMP have evacuated residents close by to the flames.
“There are cabins along the shore that have water access only and the RCMP with Wildfire Management Branch crew have done a tactical evacuation of those residents,” said Dupont, adding that CFC is currently unsure how many cabins or people have been evacuated.
An emergency operations centre will be set up to take care of residents displaced by the fire.
Weather changes could aid the spread of the fire, said Dupont.
“It depends on the wind and the topography,” she said. “Right now the fire has been backing down the hill and when it does that there’s usually debris that rolls down that’s on fire.”
