Brightly burning pumpkins will be hurled through the night sky in an attempt to bring down the castle walls at Summerland’s Saxon Estate Winery Nov. 3.
And it’s all for a good cause.
Celebrating Guy Fawkes Night (a couple days early) the annual Flamin’ Pumpkin Chunkin’ event is an annual family fun evening put on by winery owner Paul Graydon with the able assistance of the Summerland chapter of the Adrian Empire.
The Empire is a group dedicated to the study and recreation of medieval and renaissance history and culture.
They will be bringing along their trebuchet to provide the fire power for sending the lit pumpkins at the target.
“A trebuchet is a medieval weapon of war (catapult) used to destroy castles with all sorts of ammunition such as dead carcasses and other things to throw at the castle walls and kill the inhabitants, it’s a lot of fun,” said Graydon.

The $5 donation per pumpkin will go to help support the Summerland Food Bank as well as Critteraid.
“We decided to tie it in with Guy Fawkes Day and because it’s just a couple of days after Halloween it works out quite well,” said Graydon.
Guy Fawkes Night is observed on Nov. 5 primarily in the United Kingdom. Fawkes was a member of the unsuccessful Gunpowder Plot to blow up the House of Lords.
The fiery action begins about 4 p.m. at the winery located at 9819 Lumsden Ave. and runs until about 8 p.m. Last year several hundred spectators turned up for the event.
