Heavy rainfall caused by a large-scale upper low pressure system will deliver 20-30mm of rain over the next 24 hours in the West Kootenay, and 5-25 mm in the East Kootenay.
The BC River Forecast Centre issued the advisory for a flood watch on rivers in the East and West Kootenay on June 5.
The current weather system is expected to continue to deliver rain throughout the Kootenay region through Tuesday evening and into Wednesday.
According to the advisory, “Environment Canada is forecasting rainfall amounts of 30 to 40 mm Tuesday night and an additional 10 to 20 mm of rain on Wednesday with the possibility of local areas seeing higher amounts, particularly in the East Kootenay.”
Police would also like to remind motorists to use extreme caution on the roadways through the West Kootenay area, as there was heavy rain fall and snow in the Kootenay Pass area.
“The roads are very slippery with some flooding as a result of the heavy rain,” stated Grand Forks RCMP Sgt. Derrick Donovan. “There has been an increase in reports of collisions in the area and Kootenay Pass. Please adjust your driving to the current road conditions.”
Small rivers may see a brief decline on Tuesday afternoon, though all rivers are expected to rise throughout the evening and into Wednesday.
