Flooded Witsuwit’en Child and Family Centre opening delayed

Now aiming for Thursday, Jan. 10 as opening date for the daycare, with class in Band space Friday.

The latest update from Kyah Wiget Education society on the flooded Moricetown Elementary Secondary School:

Unfortunately, the opening of the Witsuwit’en Child and Family Centre has been delayed again: the centre will not be open on Tuesday, January 8. The electrician is now aiming for Thursday, January 10 as an opening date for the Day Care.

Regarding our MESS students, the current goal continues to be to provide temporary space by Friday, January 12, 2018. We aim to hold classes on Friday morning, and ending clases at noon in respect of a village funeral that afternoon.

By next Monday, we hope to be able to offer regular daycare spaces and temporary class room space for all our students.

ICount and all Adult Education programmes are unaffected: these buildings and programmes operated as usual today, Monday, January 8.

All wet material is now out of the MESS building, which means we have avoided mould problems and are facing minimal damage from this complication. KWES is very grateful to Universal Restoration Systems and the Kyah Wiget Cleaning Services, which worked tenhour shifts all weekend to accomplish this feat.

Staff met this morning and are working to get their class rooms set up in the Multiplex. We are now awaiting the environmental monitor to advise us on any contaminants, and then will begin planning for the restoration and rebuilding, with modern materials. A building contract will be released shortly based on these findings.

KWES appreciates the community’s patience as we are working to make available the most accurate and complete information on a day-by-day basis.
