Rising river levels in the Vanderhoof area are no cause for concern at this point says Rio Tinto Alcan.
Levels were on the rise at the end of last week after more water than normal was released from Kenny Dam in order to control reservoir level.
“We are going to have to release more than normal amounts of water this spring,” said Nechako Operations Coordinator with Rio Tinto Alcan, Justus Benckhuysen.
“That will result in high water in the Vanderhoof area … but the river is not expected to be flooded over the banks,” he said.
However, Benckhuysen added that this estimation is based on normal conditions.
“There is a slight risk that if we have a very wet spring there could be some flooding,” he added.
He also said that some low basements may see some leakage if the river remains high for a long time.
