Mt. Cheam Lions Club members are getting ready for a food drive Saturday outside the Lions Club Hall on Spadina Avenue to benefit the Chilliwack Food Bank.
“We haven’t had the opportunity to do our regular fundraising, and we heard there is a big need for food bank donations right now,” said Pat Johnston, president of the Mt. Cheam Lions Club. “This is one way of us reaching out to the community.”
Typically they’d be busy raising funds by selling 50/50 tickets at Chiefs games, as well as holding monthly spaghetti nights and seniors lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“Tables will be set up to accept food drive items out front,” Johnston said, adding that keeping everything outside will allow safer drop-offs from the public.
Donations of non-perishable food will be accepted by Lions club members, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 30 at 45580 Spadina Avenue. The food items and any cash will be handed over to the community food bank run by the Salvation Army of Chilliwack.
“We are looking forward to seeing a big turnout,” Johnston added. “There is a really big need for these donations, and we thought it was time for us to step up.”
As well as the Saturday, May 30 event, the local Lions Club plans to accept food donations every Saturday in June at their hall from 10 a.m. to noon.
