Four quick calls yield arrest of one chronic offender in Cowichan

The first call came in around 2:30 p.m.

RCMP have taken a suspected thief off the streets.

A Nanaimo man, well known to police, was arrested on July 18 after RCMP received no fewer than four calls regarding his behaviour.

The first call came in around 2:30 p.m. when an area resident reported what appeared to be a man on a bike casing a house along the Trans Canada Highway in Cobble Hill.

Shortly thereafter three more calls were made to police in quick succession. Those callers reported a man with a backpack had either entered or attempted to enter their homes in Cowichan Bay but had fled on his bike.

Two North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP officers were in the area at the time and were able to find the suspect. They recognized him immediately as Timothy Dafoe, someone with whom they’ve had frequent dealings.

“The suspect was arrested and property later identified as missing from one of the residences was located along with break and enter tools,” said a news release.

Dafoe now faces charges related to the break and enters and will remain in jail until his July 30 court date.

North Cowichan watch commander Cpl. Lita Wilson gave thanks to the heads’ up citizens who phoned their complaints in.

“The quick reporting of these incidents allowed our members to successfully catch this suspect, and led to his arrest,” Wilson said.
