Fraser East sees increasing COVID-19 cases, with 338 in one week

The most recent week of data available comes before the three record-breaking daily case counts

Fraser East is continuing to see a climb in COVID-19 case counts, even if it isn’t rising as rapidly as other areas in the Fraser Valley.

Between March 24 and March 30, the most recent data available from the BCCDC, Fraser East saw 338 new cases of COVID-19. This continues the gradual increase that started in early March after the area saw a significant drop in cases at the end of February.

Although the data released by the BCCDC doesn’t line up week-to-week for Fraser East and the communities that make up that health area, there are trends in which communities are driving the increase.

Abbotsford saw an exponential increase in its new COVID-19 cases from March 21 to 27, while Mission, Chilliwack and Hope also saw higher numbers of new cases. Agassiz saw a minor decrease, which made almost no difference to the total for Fraser East, as there were so few cases in that community to begin with.

Although Fraser East is seeing increasing numbers of new cases, it is nowhere near as stark as other areas of the Fraser Valley.

Both Fraser North and Fraser South are seeing significant rises in the number of new COVID-19 cases impacting their communities each week.

Fraser South has been on a upwards trend since mid-February, and although Fraser North had levelled out after a month of substantial increases, it is back on the rise.

These increases are largely due to both those health service delivery areas having some of the highest rates of new COVID-19 cases.

Fraser East is the best in the Fraser Health region, with 16.3 new cases daily per 100,000, and the second lowest in the Lower Mainland.

Fraser North is seeing 20.5 new cases daily per 100,000, up significantly from the 14.5 new cases per 100,000 from the week before.

Fraser South is by far the highest in Fraser Health, with 31.5 new cases daily per 100,000 people, and is also the second-highest in the province. Health service delivery area with the highest daily rate of new cases is North Coast Garibaldi, with 35.2 cases per 100,000 people daily.

The provincial data shows a divide between the province’s four main areas: the North, the Interior/Kootenay region, the Lower Mainland, and the Island.

The Interior, Kootenay and Island areas are all seeing less than 10 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people each day. The Northern and Lower Mainland regions, on the other hand, are seeing between 15 and 35.2 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people.

During the March 24 to 30 week, B.C. had not yet passed 1,000 new COVID-19 cases in one day. Between March 31 and April 3, it has done so three times.
