A Chilliwack high school is the second fastest-improving school in the province, according to the latest Fraser Institute ‘Report Card.
The annual report was released at the end of June, and this year they’ve highlighted the top 10 schools that are quickly improving. The top school in that regard is Agassiz secondary, and in second place is G.W. Graham.
Other schools in the top 10 are in Surrey, Invermere, Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Maple Ridge, Delta, Terrace and 100 Mile House.
The Fraser Institute looked at all of the province’s school rankings in 2014 and then again for 2018. Four years ago, GW Graham earned a 5/10 mark. This year, the school has bumped up to 8/10. Agassiz was at 4.6/10 in 2014, and is at 8.6/10 this year.
The report ranks 251 public and independent secondary schools based on seven academic indicators using student results from annual provincewide exams, grade-to-grade transition rates, and graduation rates.
“This Report Card proves that improvement is possible in every corner of the province, in every type of school serving every type of student,” said Angela MacLeod, a Fraser Institute senior policy analyst.
Of the 251 schools, G.W. Graham ranked 24 this year. Sardis secondary ranked 44, and Chilliwack secondary ranked 206. All three of the public high schools have improved their ranking over the last five years. Highroad ranked 218, dropping from 137 over previous years, and Unity is included in the elementary school rankings at 114/955.
However enlightening some may find the rankings, many educators don’t agree with the importance of the Fraser Institute annual report, arguing it misses out on nuances of learning, the value of certain programs, and other aspects of education that can make a school great.
