People in Williams Lake have been filling up buckets and buckets with free sand ever since it was made available for free outside the public works yard.
The City’s manager of municipal services, Gary Muraca, said it’s the same sand crews make to put on the streets during the winter, but this year the City decided to make it available for the public’s use.
“It’s an idea that came to us from someone who works at the pool that had seen it done in another place,” Muraca told the Tribune. “We decided it was a great incentive because it fits in with our budget and staffing constraints.”
He encouraged people to come by and get a bucket for themselvers or a neighbour that might not have a car or the ability to pick up the sand for themselves.
“It’s all about making it safe. If people put it on their driveways or sidewalks that will help.”
As long as the need is there, public works will continue to replenish the sand pile, he added.
It is accessible outside the gate at the public works yard on Second Avenue North.
People are asked to bring their own shovel.
