Around 8:30 p.m. on July 28, 100 Mile House Fire Rescue responded to a fire at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre at 175 Airport Rd.
Fire chief Roger Hollander notes that upon arrival, heavy smoke and flames were showing from inside the mechanical/sprinkler room at the rear of the building.
100 Mile House Fire Rescue crews responded with 10 firefighters, quickly advanced into the building and extinguished the fire. Hollander adds they were back to the hall at 11:43 a.m.
The fire occurred in the mechanical/sprinkler room; however, it is unclear at this time how it started.
Part of the automatic sprinkler system equipment was damaged, but the blaze was contained to the room.
Hollander added the fire is not considered to be suspicious.
A Rec. Centre staff member was able to make it out of the building without injury.
Canlan Ice Sports manager Josh Dickerson says there isn’t much he can say about the fire damage at this point, but he may have more information next week.
However, Dickerson says he has been working with Hollander and it was decided the arena will be closed to the public until it can be determined what caused the fire.
“Staff will be allowed in, but it will remain closed to the public until we figure everything out.”
