38 Years Ago (1980): Residents of 70 Mile House began a petition aimed at getting consideration for the area as a possible site for a plywood plant proposed by 11 Mile Site Construction of Prince George. The company was seeking approval for construction of the plant on Crown land one mile east of Highway 97 on Highway 24 near Lone Butte. Many residents of 70 Mile House believed 70 Mile already had an ideal site for it.
27 Years Ago (1991): The Annual CKBX Turkey Day was a record buster. Announcer Larry Rode said the station received 323 pledges, representing $8,100. “Last year we set a record and raised $6,500 and it looks like we’ve set another. This one will be hard to beat,” said Rode. Turkey Day was held to raise funds for the annual 100 Mile Food Bank Christmas Hamper distribution. According to food bank coordinator Bob Hicks, “It looks like we have a little over half the funds.”
21 Years Ago (1997): A truck thief’s luck went from bad to worse after the skidder he stole to tow his stolen pickup truck attracted the attention of the RCMP. Police found a man driving a skidder on the 6000 Road towing a pickup truck with extensive damage. Police then discovered that not only did the pickup truck had stolen plates from Maple Ridge, but the truck itself had also been stolen from Grand Forks.
17 Years Ago (2001): School District 27 teachers worked on Nov. 30, without pay. The day was originally scheduled as a non-instructional day – teachers were able to spend five hours working on accreditation or annual reports and students were not to attend school. Phase one of the teachers’ job action lists accreditation as one of the services that teachers are not to provide. Anywhere from 20-26 other British Columbia school districts were also faced with the same dilemma.
8 Years Ago (2010): District of 100 Mile House councillors gave unanimous consent to merge the services of the ice arena, curling rink and recreational programs and some ball fields into the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) South Cariboo Recreation Service bylaw on Nov. 22, 2010. At the time, there were separate CRD functions to support the curling rink, the arena, programming and ball fields. They had separate budgets and administration despite being in the same building and on the same property.
