Senior governments announced funding Tuesday towards the long-awaited Cumberland High Performance Wastewater Lagoon Upgrade.
The federal government is providing $3.8 million, the province is kicking in $3.2 million and the Village is contributing more than $2.5 million. The new treatment system will provide a high level of treatment with phosphorous removal to protect the downstream waterways of Maple Creek and the Trent River, and will restore an old wetland area to enhance nature and add recreational opportunities.
“We’ve been waiting for this announcement for quite a while — keeping our fingers crossed that it was going to happen,” Cumberland Mayor Leslie Baird said.
The lagoon upgrade is among several projects to receive senior government funds for drinking water and wastewater system upgrades.
“Congratulations to the Village of Cumberland for securing this important infrastructure investment towards the health and safety of their residents,” Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns said. “This is the result of high quality planning, and a job well done by Cumberland council and staff.”
