The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has updated its participation funding allocation for the aboriginal funding envelope for groups to participate in the environmental assessment of the Spanish Mountain Gold Mine Project.
Originally two recipients were successful — the Soda Creek Indian Band (Xatsull First Nation) was granted $28,200 and the Williams Lake Indian Band was granted $28,200. The original requests from the two groups totalled $176,600.
In December, after receiving a request for an extended deadline for its application, the Lkatko Dene First Nation request for $16,500 was considered on Jan. 6, 2012, resulting in the group being granted $15,030.
The proposed open pit gold mine is located 70 kilometres northeast of William Lake. It is anticipated the mine will process 40,000 tonnes per day over 10 years.
