Community members in the North Shuswap are trying to help out a family whose home was destroyed by fire on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
At approximately 4 p.m. that day, firefighters from Celista, Anglemont and Scotch Creek/Lee Creek fire halls responded to the fire on Leopold Road between Scotch Creek and Celista that destroyed the home.
Wilda Mclellan and Mark Vancornewal as well as their children Ben Robinson and Donovan Mclellan, who are in their 20s, were displaced by the fire. They have been receiving help from friends as well as from the Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s Emergency Social Services.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to benefit the family.
A friend who set up the account writes: “A house fire took everything they owned today. A wonderful North Shuswap family who does so much for others now needs your help. Please donate if you can so that they can get what they need to get through this tough time. Anything helps.”
The page has so far raised about half of its $5,000 goal. It can be found at: https://www.gofundme.com/9c85b9-lost-everything-in-house-fire.

Derek Sutherland, team leader of protective services for the regional district, said firefighters were able to knock the fire down in a little over an hour.
“It was fully involved when crews arrived,” he said.
The tower of black smoke coming from the fire was visible to boaters on Shuswap Lake.
Although BC Wildfire was standing by with air support in case the blaze took off and spread to nearby trees, Sutherland said they weren’t needed.
