As temperatures are set to dip to 2 degrees tonight, with a windchill of -3, the Gateway of Hope is issuing an extreme weather alert for those who are homeless.
The Langley facility, at 5787 Langley Bypass, will open their extreme weather shelter tonight (Jan. 26) from 7 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
The extreme weather shelter has 15 beds and is open anytime it feels like -2 degrees or colder outside. The last time it was in use was over the holidays, from Jan. 1 to 3.
Tiffany Sawatzky, residential services manager at the Gateway of Hope, said the shelter receives the most overnight stays when it is heavily raining, but it is just as important for people to stay over when it is cold, too.
She encourages all who are sleeping outside tonight to come to the safety of the shelter.
