– I have 25 years of experience as an elected official and understand the systems and the processes.

Columbia Shuswap Regional District Area A director Karen Cathcart

At one of the very first resident engagement sessions, an Area A resident asked me when we were discussing the proposed Good Neighbour Policy: “will you listen to your residents?” My answer was yes. Incidentally, the CSRD pulled the Good Neighbour Policy, as there was no support for it.

Active listening is critically important when it is your job to bring issues to the CSRD Board table for action. Active listening is also about understanding the key messaging your residents are bringing forward. This was evident in the results of the Noise bylaw. There was extensive discussion with residents both one on one and in small groups.

Collecting information and data is essential for the Area A Director to be able to form an educated decision and bring the wishes of the majority of folks back to the CSRD Board table.

I am a tireless advocate for residents at the CSRD table for their issues. As you all know Golden is the furthest away from Salmon Arm we are the largest geographic area (over 17,000 sq. kilometers) of all the CSRD areas.

I represent you. I am happy to continue to do this work because it is important to have a strong voice at the table.
