A GoFundMe fundraiser has been created to help get more children on Chilliwack’s new pump track this summer.
Amber Price is leading the effort to get more kids outfitted in proper helmets.
Currently kids who cannot afford a helmet are unable to access the pump track,” she wrote. “Let’s ensure that economics don’t prevent our youth from having fun, getting exercise and enjoying our awesome pump track!”
Price set a goal of $1,000 and generous donors had already pushed beyond that mark within nine hours of the GoFundMe going live. As of Friday morning, $1,020 had been given to the cause, including a $500 gift from Shannon Bauman.
“We’ve officially put 12 kids back on the pump track,” Price wrote in an update. “Thank you for your generosity! Let’s share and get Chilliwack’s community spirit going. Vulnerable youth need us to fill the gap so that they can have fun with their friends.”
Chilliwack mayor Ken Popove and Brian Goldstone of Griffin Security had previously asked for donations of lightly-used helmets, or cash in lieu to help underprivileged kids, and donations are being accepted at The Book Man (45939 Wellington Avenue) and Ken’s Tire and Wheel (45798 Alexander Avenue). Price said there are local sports stores that are willing to sell safety gear at cost to make sure any cash donations go as far as possible.
