The weather was great but the feeling behind the NOCLS golf tournament was even better.
It was another record breaking year for the 22nd annual NOCLS Charity Golf Classic Friday at Vernon Golf and Country Club with a total of $112,414 raised on behalf of developmentally disabled adults.
“What an amazing group of people who understand the meaning of giving,” said Garry Molitwenick, North Okanagan Community Life Society executive director. “We would like to thank all the volunteers, caddies, those who donated, those who purchased items, committee members, the media and all the golfers for making this year’s event the most successful event ever.”
The event actually got underway Thursday night with $18,400 raised at the caddy auction.
Caddy Danny Miller, former owner of Royal Volkswagen, was purchased for $4,000 by Doug Thorlakson and Neil Bradbury, and support from local businesses brought his value up to $10,000.
Miller now lives in California but makes the trip back to Vernon for this tournament every year to support a charity he cherishes.
“It’s about the great people that come out to this. I can run the cart and hand out pepperoni but they are the ones writing the cheques,” said Miller.
The major auction on Friday, consisting of 29 items and conducted by Bob Woodman, raised $44,900, with the Kal Tire Jet golf package to Oregon going for $20,000.
The low gross title, at 58, went to the team of Brian Johnston, Mike Otter, Brian Fair and Al Gaudette while the Far West winning team, low net at 12-under par, was made up of Ken Chaun, Iain Butler, Paul Tambellini and Cameron Johnston.
