Signs of an improved economy are under construction in Enderby.
Along with the city’s new animated sign moving ahead, a couple of development permits point to a boost in business.
“Things are looking up here,” said Mayor Howie Cyr.
A new industrial business is moving into town.
Vanko Services will be sprucing up the former North Valley Frameworks buildings on Bass Avenue.
“That bodes well for the community because it’s occupied and they’re going to spruce things up,” said Cyr of the buildings which have only been deteriorating as they remained vacant.
There are also plans for construction on a vacant lot at 308 George Street. A two-storey commercial building could soon occupy the lot, and it will be home to retail/office space on the first floor and a dwelling upstairs.
“It’s going to add to the appearance of our thoroughfare,” said Cyr of the application, which proposes to keep the existing triplex on site.
Enderby is also eager to see an animated sign erected at the corner of George Street (Highway 97) and Mill Avenue.
“That’s a really positive thing, it shows that we’re moving forward now,” said Cyr. “We’re hoping to have it up and running in the next few weeks.”
The $20,000, double-sided sign will allow the city to promote local events, something Cyr wishes they had prior to the Gold Panning Championships over the long weekend.
The sign also allows city staff to update events wirelessly from city hall.
Enderby is also eyeing an outdoor fitness centre, and is pursuing grants to help purchase the equipment – just another positive sign for the community, said Cyr.
