If you smell something good in Yarrow this week, just follow your nose to the fifth annual Barn Burner BBQ event at Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry.
The event is officially sanctioned by the Kansas city BBQ Society and features 21 teams from all over the Lower Mainland and beyond competing in the traditional four categories: beef brisket, pulled pork, chicken, and ribs.
The winning team will take home their share of $5,000 in prize money, along with the Barn Burner BBQ Grand Championship trophy, and a spot in the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational BBQ in Tennessee.

Teams also compete in a “Black Box” cook-off. This “Iron Chef” style competition presents cooks with a black box containing four mystery ingredients. All ingredients must be incorporated into a single dish and submitted to the judges, who will award points based on originality, taste and presentation.
But the competition cooking is just part of the family-friendly event featuring BBQ samples (in limited supply) with a variety of food trucks, too.
Entertainment includes comedian Cliff Prang as emcee with music by Ryan McAllister, The K-O’s, and the Tanner Olsen Band. The are also activities for the whole family including a climbing wall, mechanical bull, dunk tank, face-painting, animal balloons and more.
Entry is by donation, recommended at $5 per person with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the Full Cupboard, a program designed to raise food, funds, and awareness for food banks in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey and surrounding communities.
Last year’s event raised $9,543, for a total exceeding $19,000 in three years.
