Grand Forks fire crews respond to ‘abandoned’ house fire

No one was in the home at the time of the fire.

Members of Grand Forks Fire/Rescue responded to a house fire on Donaldson Avenue near 14th Street and 68th Avenue early Tuesday morning.

The fire was a “fully involved” structure fire on a home in the Donaldson area near the Trans Canada Trail, said deputy chief Rich Piche. To the best of the fire department’s knowledge and through talking to neighbours Piche said the home appears to have been abandoned following the owner’s death about a year ago. Crews arrived on scene shortly before 6 a.m. and spent about two hours extinguishing the blaze.

The cause of the fire is as of yet undetermined, Piche said, and there were no injuries as there was no one in the structure at the time of the fire. The fire was visible from a nearby road, and was called in by motorist.

Crews worked on extinguishing hot spots from outside the structure Tuesday and had not entered the building as the ceiling is believed to be compromised, Piche said; crews expected to return to the scene Wednesday for further investigation.
