There is still no word yet on what will occur to the site of the Grand Forks Hotel, where pieces of rubble remain.
Property owner Bob Smith still has no idea what is happening.
“I’ve been phoning them and everything else, but all they come up with is that they’re still looking at a contamination aspect in the report,” he said. “Apparently, there was asbestos lining on the pipes in there so they’re tying us all up for that.”
Future plans for the site where the hotel stood have yet to be determined because the process is taking so long, added Smith.
“I wish I knew what was going on,” he said. “It’s driving me nuts.”
The historic Grand Forks Hotel was completely destroyed and the Winnipeg Hotel damaged due to a pair of early-morning fires on March 7.
According to Boundary Regional RCMP, police were responding to a report of a fire at the Grand Forks Hotel at about 3 a.m. when a fire was detected at the Winnipeg Hotel on Central Avenue in Grand Forks.
The Winnipeg Hotel was smoke damaged, but the Grand Forks Hotel remains vacant at the corner of Central Avenue and 2nd Street.
