Grand openings for new fire halls

Construction is now complete on new firehalls in the Mt. Lehman and Matsqui areas, and grand openings for both projects are being held this month.

The first opening, on Wednesday, showcased the Mt. Lehman Firehall No. 5, with the opening of Matsqui’s Firehall No. 4 scheduled for next Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The previous Mt. Lehman hall was 50 years old and previously scheduled for replacement in 2001, while the Matsqui hall was 52 years old and scheduled for replacement in 2002. Neither halls were large enough to accommodate modern emergency vehicles comfortably.

The grand opening of Firehall No. 4 in Matsqui, on Wallace Street, starts at 6 p.m. on Feb. 10.

The two fire halls were expects to cost just over $3 million, and the city expects to come in under budget by $150,000.
