Every night supper is served for the homeless as well as struggling families behind the firehall in downtown Campbell River.
With the weather getting harsher and wetter the organization who puts on the daily event, Grassroots Kind Hearts Society, is looking to continue serving nutritional meals as well as take the event inside.
They have set up a Black Press for Good crowdfunding campaign in hopes of raising enough funds to either rent or build a place where they can continue their mission.
“With money raised through Crowdfunding and other fundraising activities we will continue to purchase nutritious food to feed and support our Elders, family and friends who live on the streets or who are at risk of being homeless and those living in poverty conditions in Campbell River, BC,” says the groups crowdfunding campaign page.
The society was founded by Krisandra Rufus in April, 2015 when her nephew reached out to her saying he was homeless and hungry.
She took dinner to him and saw that there were many others in similar situations, so she started the nightly dinners.
Over the months many volunteers have contributed to cooking for an average of 70 people per night.
So far the society they have helped 12 people transition off the streets and into treatment.
And now they are asking for support from the community.
