The Greater Victoria School District (SD 61) is updating all its forms to include non-binary gender options.
Trustee Rob Paynter’s motion, that all forms used by the District require individuals to report gender information include non-binary options, was carried unanimously by the board at the SD61 board meeting on Monday.

“I think we’ve done a pretty good job already but this is just making sure we go that extra step,” said board chair Jordan Watters. “I think the hope with this motion is we can make sure that all of our internal documents include inclusive options.”
The decision comes after the District was one of the first, back in 2017, to start training staff under the SOGI123 curriculum – a resource for inclusive, LGBTQ+ education.
Watters said the decision is a “continuation of our real move towards creating inclusive learning environments where all of our students and staff feel safe and respected.”
