The 44th annual Griz Days is around the corner, pandemic or not.
Events formally start tomorrow (Mar. 5), with Moose on the Loose, Story Walk, Turns with Griz himself on the hill and a ‘History of Griz Days’ documentary streamed online.
While all events are either virtual or socially distanced, there’s still a few things around town you can enjoy alone or in your own bubble, with local businesses getting behind the annual event.
Try out some Griz-themed cocktails at the Fernie Distillers – on sale from Thursday through to Sunday you can try out either a warm or cold Griz-themed cocktail.
Next door at the Legion, on Friday and Saturday you can try the Griz Warmer and the Griz BBQ Caeser. The Legion will also be streaming the history of Griz Days on Friday, and the Francophone Festival on Saturday.
Meanwhile anyone with a sweet tooth in town can grab a Griz cookie from Mugshots between Mar 5 and 7, with all proceeds going to the Rotary club.
There’s plenty of good grub around town this weekend in the spirit of the Griz – Fernie Catering Co is doing a Griz Days BBQ Basket, Freshies will have the Grizzly Breakfast Sandwich on special, while the Vogue Theatre and Fernie Rotary will be selling fresh popcorn for pickup.
Other happenings include the Fernie Hotel and Pub which will also be streaming the Extreme Griz among other virtual events, while the Library will be hosting a colouring contest – and of course on Saturday night from 8pm there will be fireworks!
Don’t forget to pick up your own 2021 Griz Pin! Only 1,000 were made this year given the challenges of a smaller festival. The owner of the winning pin (which will be drawn on Wednesday next week) will be able to select a charity for a $1,000 donation. Take a selfie of yourself with your pin with the hashtag #showusyourgrizpin and you can go int the running to win a $100 gift card to a local business of your choice.
A full run-down of events happening on Facebook and passively around town is available on the Griz Days website.
