Committee looking to overhaul primary care in city; plan may include urgent care centre

A plan to get more Abbotsford residents connected with a physician will be submitted to the Ministry of Health later this year.

A group comprised mostly of doctors and health officials will look to craft a plan for a “primary care network” that will aim to provide extended hours for clinics, same-day access to urgent care, and better access and attachment with physicians.

The networks could include an urgent care centre, a key promise by the NDP government. In June, the province announced that the first such clinic would be built in Surrey. The government says nine others will be built around the province.

They may also involve community health centres that can link health and social services.

A senior city staffer will serve as a liaison, for the local group – the Abbotsford Collaborative Services Committee – as it develops its plan.
