Gwaii Trust election Saturday

Residents of central Graham Island go to the polls Saturday to elect a Gwaii Trust director. There is one polling station, at the village office in Port Clements, open from 8 am to 8 pm. Two candidates are running, incumbent director Jim Abbott and Berry Wijdeven, both of Tlell. About 15 people voted at the advance poll Nov. 7. Four hundred are eligible to vote on Saturday.The Gwaii Trust is an all-islands organization that controls a trust fund worth millions and distributes a portion each year to islanders.It has eight directors representing all communities plus a chair appointed by the CHN. Only Moresby and central Graham Island elect their directors. The others are appointed by their communities. Kristy Schmitz of Sandspit was recently acclaimed as the director for Moresby Island.Central Graham Island includes Port, Tlell, north to Nadu Road and south to Lawn Hill.
