The Okanagan Skaha School District received final approval from the Ministry of Education to replace the gym at Summerland Secondary School.
In June, the school board announced its plan to commit to the $10.5 million project, but needed approval from the ministry before proceeding.

The gym has been a priority for the school board for many years. The project will be funded by proceeds from the sale of the McNicoll Park Middle School property in Penticton. The middle school was sold in December, 2019.
The new Summerland gym will have a capacity for 650 students, a new weight room overlooking the gym and new entrances.
The existing Summerland Secondary School gym was built in 1951 and is not big enough for regulation sports courts.
The school district will begin engagement opportunities with Summerland Secondary School staff and its parent community to provide feedback on the project soon.
The school district will begin the design phase in the next few months and hopes to have groundbreaking in the fall of 2021.
