It seems there is some confusion about opening day of the 2011 sport halibut season.
Fishermen figured it was Tuesday (Feb. 1) — as has been the case for many years — but they say Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has arbitrarily changed opening day until the end of the month.
They also complain the information has not been properly communicated with the angling community, other than a posting on the DFO website (www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/index-eng.htm). A spokesperson at the Sport Fishing Advisory Committee said DFO typically comes out with a variation notice.
According to DFO, opening times for recreational halibut fishing remain closed until further notice.
It also said to expect an announcement soon.
