As the Comox Valley got its first taste of winter earlier than usual this year, G.P. Vanier student Jade Hansen hopes to make the season a little bit warmer for those on the streets.
For the past seven years, Hansen has organized her annual winter jacket and warm clothes drive. Her goal this year to raise as many clothes as possible including coats, clothes, sweaters and toques for those in need in the Valley.
“We’re looking for everything this year. Whatever we give to (the Salvation Army for distribution) they can use, but the focus is on warm winter clothing.”
Seven years ago, Hansen knew she had to do something for those less fortunate following a trip to Vancouver with her family, and seeing “many homeless people who looked cold, and I wanted to help.”
This year, in conjunction with her warm clothes drive, Hansen is also creating a different endeavour – one to specifically help women. She is hoping to collect sealed, boxed feminine hygiene products to donate to women who may not have access to them.
“Now that I’m older, I understand the need and want to help other women,” noted the grade 10 student.
Throughout the month until Nov. 19, donations can be dropped off at the Remax Ocean Pacific Realty Courtenay office (2230 Cliffe Ave.) Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On Nov. 19, Hansen will have a BBQ with hot dogs and apple cider available at Remax as a ‘thank you’ to those who donate items from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
